A heat pump does what the name suggests, it pumps heat from one location to another. In the summer it acts as an air conditioner and pumps heat out of the home to the outside via the refrigerant circuit, and in the winter it reverses itself and pumps heat from outdoors back into your home.
Dual Fuel / Hybrid Systems
Generally there is enough heat in the outdoor air down to about 35 degrees to make heat pump operation effective. When it gets below 35 degrees then a back up source of heat is needed. Here in Colorado a gas furnace is the the most common type. Hence the term Dual Fuel or Hybrid system.
